RIO DE JANEIRO, BR - The city of Rio de Janeiro has been selected as the Host City of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016 following a vote by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session. IOC President Jacques Rogge made the announcement at the close of the first day of meetings of the IOC’s 121st Session in Copenhagen, Denmark. Rio de Janeiro received 66 votes in the final round of voting and beat Chicago (USA), Tokyo (Japan) and Madrid (Spain) for the coveted 2016 rights. For the first time in history South America will host an Olympic Games. Brazil was the only country of the four candidate countries represented to not have previously hosted an Olympic Games. Following the election, Rogge said, “I would like to congratulate the city of Rio de Janeiro on its election as the host of the 2016 Olympic Games. Rio de Janeiro presented the IOC with a very strong technical bid, built upon a vision of the Games being a celebration of the athletes and sport, as well as providing the opportunity for the city, region and country to deliver their broader long-term aspirations for the future. This call to “live your passion” clearly struck a chord with my fellow members, and we now look forward to seeing Rio de Janeiro staging the first Olympic Games on the continent of South America. Well done, Rio!”

SOUTHPACIFIC, CR - Costa Rica’s oceanic waters are blessed with an abundant biodiversity which includes several species of dolphins and whales. As of 1953, whale watching and dolphin watching in Costa Rica has become a sustainable tourist service which had been gradually evolving to one of the most eco-friendly and intense nature appreciation tours in the country. The species of dolphins that can be found in Costa Rica waters are the Spotted, Spinner, Bottlenose, Common and Orcas. The species of whales that migrate to or live in Costa Rican waters are the False Killer, Pilot, Beaked and Humpback whales. Whale watching in Costa Rica is an exciting tour because Costa Rica has one of the largest Humpback whale reproductive seasons and receives specimens from both the southern and northern hemispheres. The best place for whale watching in Costa Rica would be the central and south pacific, especially the areas around Uvita, Dominical and the OSA Peninsula like Drake Bay and Caño Island. Throughout all these places you will find pods of humpbacks, orcas, pilots and more surfacing for air and sometimes even staying as to investigate the humans that are themselves watching the whales. In the midst of it all there are also legions of dolphins found all over the marine environment, sometimes traveling in pods that number in the hundreds.

BUENOS AIRES, AR- With the demolition of the existing Terminal “C” (known as the horseshoe), the first phase of the project for the new International Airport of Ezeiza has finally started. The plan foresees a total investment of 250 million dollars. It will have capacity to serve 13 million passengers a year and a total area of 130,000 square meters. The first phase will be completed by September next year and will require an investment of 40 million dollars. The project includes the construction of a new building for domestic flights to accommodate 2.5 million domestic passengers a year. The works under way, which do not hinder normal airport operations, are intended to extend operating capacity (with an extension in area) for the cargo platform. In addition, it plans to build a new access road, a new control position, and a new fire station. Terminal “C”, however, must be demolished before construction can proceed. The idea is to harmonize operations in different areas such as runways, aprons, roads, and the adjacent facilities. Terminal A and its different sectors will be preserved and refurbished. Thus, and together with a completely new building, it will be the sole international and domestic terminal. The new Ezeiza airport will have 5 new parking lots, 17 boarding brides, a new control tower, 4,500 parking spaces, 100 check-in positions, 30 Immigration counters, and 40 boarding gates.

The New Route of Yerba Mate - Argentina
NORTHEAST, AR- Argentina is the largest producer and exporter of yerba mate. Its use is spread all over the country, regardless of age or social class. It is also a mark of distinction of argentine culture that attracts the attention of visitors. The new Route of the Yerba Mate (RYM) was born to put this product in perspective: a way to know its origins, from the small seed to the crop through the harvesting, processing and manufacturing. |
| |
Through guided tours, horseback riding, hiking, canoeing, tastings and activities in the jungle, this circuit offers a unique journey to the origin of the pure argentine culture. One of the particularities of this route is that it was originally conceived as a venture that brings together the different actors involved in the cultivation of the herb, and is aimed at showcasing the attractions of the region while promoting economic development in the region. With the participation of the full range of stakeholders associated with this production, as large and small farmers, artisans and ranchers, hoteliers and travel agencies, the Rural Tourism Area in the Faculty of Agriculture put together a route that covers more than a thousand miles of the Argentine coast and offers a look on the multiple experiences of the yerba mate. Rural tourism is concerned with finding the perfect balance of tourist importance, agricultural production, cultural identity and socio-economic development of all social sectors in the region. In terms of attractions and activities, they are varied and always in a direct or indirect way have close contact with the productive system and the culture of the yerba mate. There is horseback riding, hiking, fishing, canoeing and rappelling. The accommodations were designed to suit all tastes, from cozy rooms in estancias to campsites and even private residences. Another feature that makes this a most interesting destination is the chance to try delicious and unique dishes that combine several products typical of the region but which have the particularity to include yerba mate as an ingredient. Also, the RYM fits perfectly to the most important tourist attractions in the provinces: the Iguazú Falls, Moconá Falls in Misiones and Esteros del Ibera in Corrientes.

The Peruvian gastronomy industry moves approximately 1.5 billion dollars worldwide each year and the goal is to surpass the 150 billion dollars of Japan's food industry, Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio said. In an interview with Chilean newspaper La Tercera, Acurio said this amount does not only include the money spent in restaurants, but everything related to food from ingredients to tableware. He added that the global financial crisis has not affected his restaurant projects in various parts around the world but, for example, has caused real estate prices to drop in New York where he plans to open another La Mar Cevicheria with an investment of 10 million dollars. The renowned chef added that he also plans to open a US $ 14 million La Mar restaurant in London during 2010. Acurio commented that he plans to invest 1.2 million dollars in a new "Tanta" restaurant in Chile, which will be the third one in that country. Acurio's expansion plan also includes Chifa food and grill restaurants in the neighboring country. "Chile is a fantastic place to continue our expansion and Peruvian food is the most valued in this country," he told La Tercera.

MACHU PICCHU, PE - A technical study and a fitting out project must be done before starting any night visits to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, said the head of the archeological park of Machu Picchu, Fernando Astete. “Night visits to the Inca citadel can't be allowed right away; first we need to make a study to extend the visiting hours, as well as add more personnel for the customer service. Besides, a fitting out project of a lighting system must be done.” Tourism Vice Minister, Pablo Lopez, said days earlier that a new presentation of the citadel is being set to preserve the place. The proposal is being evaluated in coordination with The Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary Management Unit (UGM), led by Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur). A consultant will be hired to see the subject through. The objective of this approach is to extend the visiting hours to the Inca citadel between 09:00 and 16:00.
