Route 40 Challenge - Argentina

The Route 40 Challenge is a race competition that will take place along route 40 from Cabo Virgenes (in the extreme south of the province of Santa Cruz) to La Quiaca, in the north. It will run April 11th through the 23rd, 2010 and be attended by professional and amateur drivers. It’s part of the celebrations for the Bicentennial May Revolution in Argentina. The route is nearly 5,000 miles, runs through eleven provinces in ten different stages. Not only professional drivers compete; registration is open to all motorists or motorcyclists who dare to accept the challenge. The organization expects to have 300 competitors, including trucks, motorcycles and quads. Route 40 was chosen for this because, "It´s in the path of national parks and has a great diversity of landscape," said Minister of Tourism, Enrique Meyer. Built in 1935, its path includes the Perito Moreno Glacier in Santa Cruz, El Bolson, in Rio Negro, Malargue in Mendozam Talampaya National Park in La Rioja, Calchaquíes Valleys in Tucuman and San Antonio de los Cobres, at the station for Train to the Clouds in Salta. Registration is open now at www.desafioruta40.com.ar and will end on January 25th, 2010.

Cristobal Campana, Director of 110 Executing Unit, who is responsible for the restoration and conservation of the largest mud-built citadel in the world, stated that they found a total of 17 anthropomorphic wood statuettes, which are built into the ground and within a few vaulted niches in the sides of the ceremonial temple entrance. “We have found 20 vaulted niches, but only 17 statuettes. We believe that the missing 3 were removed by settlers before closing the temple,” he said. “This is the most important find in the last years performed by Peruvian archaeologists in Chan Chan citadel. At present, 16 specialists are performing restoration works in situ,” he added. He pointed out that these statuettes may have been placed in this area between 1350 and 1400 A.D., a period that belongs to the Chimu culture, largely developed in northern Peru.

A large increase in the number of new, fully-staffed vacation homes in Costa Rica is offering travelers a care-free housing option without skimping on the quality. Starting in Guanacaste with the high-end Villa Buena Onda and spreading to popular coastal towns like Manuel Antonio and Punta de Vista (opening 2010), a handful of new rentals have been built as private resorts with industrial kitchens and staff quarters set to attend to groups of travelers. With all-inclusive prices averaging around $200 per person, Villa Buena Onda has become Costa Rica’s answer to clients seeking a luxurious all inclusive getaway, according to travel executive Richard Bexon. The success of the villa has not gone unheard and several new projects are set to open in the market in 2010, namely the Punta de Vista villa in Manuel Antonio. The villa, a family project, is truly turning into a work of perfection. Christien Johnson, co-visionary of the project, explained that the idea to run the villa as a full-service all inclusive property came about after noticing the lack of all inclusive properties in the region.
